Walk This Way

Getting to school can be an issue for students around the world. Whether a person is walking, biking, driving, or sitting in the big yellow bus, they are doing what they can to get their education.

When it comes to the different types of transportation, there are certain aspects that come into play. Time is a main component in the discussion of getting to school.

For a student who commutes on foot, their day starts earlier than most.

Depending on the distance between their house and the school, a student could spend close to 45 minutes just trying to get to school.

To put this into perspective, an average person who showers, eats the extremely recommended breakfast, and gets dressed in the dress code approved school clothes, spends close to 45 minutes just getting ready.

So to be on time for the 7:55 bell, a student walking to school would, at the very least, have to wake up at 6:25 in the morning. That time may not seem too bad for some, but for students who work, participate in sports after school, or are just swamped with homework, the lack of naptime can be detrimental to their well-being.

Now, bus riders do not have things much better. Buses arrive and leave as early as 7:15.

This brings us to the final and best mode of transportation to school, the personal automobile. Whether your mom drives in her minivan or you drive yourself in that hand-me-down station wagon, the benefits of driving to school are clear.

Students spend no time waiting at bus stops or growing calluses on their feet. The freedom of being able to leave your house whenever you want is glorious.

The radio and aux cord are at your disposal and the ability to go at your own pace is therapeutic.

The truth of the matter is, getting to school at such an early time is a necessary evil needed for real education. Cars just make the evil a little less heart breaking.
